A huge lunar meteorite crashed down to Earth thousands of years ago, and people discovered it in a desert in Mauritania last year. Mauritania is a country in Northwestern Africa.

Now the 5.4-kilogram rock is going on auction, and people think that it will sell for more than 500,000 dollars because it is so big. Lunar meteorites are usually about as big as an apple, and it is something special to hold a piece of the moon in your hands too.

“The Gift”  By Donald J. Sears (Թարգմանություն)

The Gift

 By Donald J. Sears

He watched the snow fall outside the picture window while Bing Crosby sang White Christmas on the CD player. The newly decorated tree looked as good as ever, with its lights and tinsel and wooden soldiers hanging in th places.

This is my fourteenth Christmas, he thought as he turned back to the table and finished wrapping his mother’s present, a gift pack of Emeraude that he gave her every year.

As he put the present under the tree, his mother came in from work. She sold real estate and was out quite a lot lately.

“He Brain. The tree looks nice. What a day. Could you shovel the walk?”  was her  greeting.

:Sure, Mom,” he said as he stood up from crouching near the plastic fireplace.

” Mom,” he said as he put on his jacket, ” I don’t know why but it just doesn’t feel like Christmas to me, I know it’s only two days away but it just doesn’t feel like Christmas.”

“Oh, I know, honey. Can you take the garbage out on your way?”

Grabbing the half-tied Hefty bag, Brain stepped into the cold evening air. He tossed the bag into the open can and picked up  the shovel near the porch. As he worked at clearing away the snow, he couldn’t keerp from thinking how much he used to enjoy Christmas. The lights and the songs and the presents used to be a lot more fun. Now, it  was okay, but it just wasn’t the same. The magic that Christmas time used to bring simply didn’t come anymore.

Maybe it’s because  Dad isn’t around much anymore, he thought as the shovel scraped along the frozen walk. He had had  a ” weekend father” from the time  he was eight-since his parents’  divorce-and his Chistmases since then were spent half-a-day with Dad and half-a-day with Mom.

” Maybe yhat’s why I just can’t get in the mood anymore,” he said to himself. “Of maybe Dad  was right last year when he told me that Christmas is just for kids.”

“You’ll find as you get older that Christmas is really just another day. It’s nice for the little kids but when you’re  grown up, it’s not  that special anymore,” is how his father answered him last year  when he asked why it didn’t feel like Christmas then.

“I guess I’m just getting too old for Santa Claus and sleigh bells and stuff,” was Brian’s  conclusion as he stuffed the blade of the shovel into the newly piled snowbank, stomped his boots and walked inside.

He was taking off his coat when his mother called, “Brain, wash up, honey. Uncle Jim is coming over for dinner.”

Brain groaned as he headed for the bathroom. Uncle Jim wasn’t a bad guy but he was kind of boring and didn’t say much. It’s not  that Brian disliked his uncle; it was just that  he was an average person- on one special or exciting- and Brian wasn’t thrilled to be around him. As he washed, Brain braced himself for a long evening.

” Marry Cgristmas, Brain” Jim said when he oppened the door.

“Yeah, sure,” replied Brain in a half-hearted tone.

“The place looks very nice; You did a fine job. Santa is sure to stop here” Jim assured him.

I don’t think I’m  going to be able to take this guy all night if he keeps this up, Brian yhought to himself as he took his uncle’s coat.

“Jim,” Brian’s mother began, : will you take Brain to see the decorations downtown tommorrow? He needs to get into the spirit of things  a little more.”

” No, Mom, that’s okay,” snapped Brain. The thought of spending a whole day with his uncle made him ill.

“Sure. Be glad to,” Jim replied. I have to do some last minute shopping anyhow.”

No, really, that’s okay,” pleaded Brain, but his efforts did him no good. The last thing Jim said when he left that noght was, “See you tomorrow morning, Brain. Pick you up at ten.” Brain  resigned himself to the fact  that he was indeed going to spend the next day with his uncle, trying to   ” get into the spirit of Christmas.”

That night Brian lay in bed looking at the blanket of snow covering the lawn. The stars were out and the lights on the neigbors’ houses blinked a rainbow of colors. Smoke from their  chimneys billowed gently into the air. It was a Christmas postcard scene. His mother stuck her head into his room as she passed and  noticed  the winter scene outside.

“Sure looks like Christmas, doesn’t it?” she said.

“Sure does,” a Brainresponded and buried his head in his pillow.

When she had gone, he closed his eyes, took a deep breath and gently sobbed.

Jim showed up at ten sharp the following morning and he and Bria went into town.

“So you can’t get into the Christmas spirit, huh Brian?” Jim  asked.

“Nah, not really,” was Brian’s cold reply.

“Well, maybe your mom’s right. Meybe the decorations in all the stores will help,” Jim suggested as they headed into a bookstore.

“Maybe,”  Brian said, knowing that if anything was going to  brighten his spirits, it certainly wasn’t in a bookstore at Christmas.

He tagged along after Jim from store to store, never really shopping or even noticing the holiday displays. The two spoke little, which was fine with Brian who just wanted to get back home. He had realized from the start that the decorations and displays would not cheer him up, and being with his uncle just made it  worse. Maybe the best thing to do would be to just let Christmas pass-just like any other day-and forget about how special it used  to feel. His father had been right- Christmas is just for kids.”

“Heu Brian, over here,” shouted Jim, who  was standing in the doorway of a toy store. “I always make this my next to last stpo on Christmas eve.”

“Why? You don’t have any kids.”

“I know, but buying toys  sometimes makes me feel like a kid again. Try it. It might  help,” Jim said enthusiastically.

Brian was skeptical, and  certainly did not want to waste his money on a kid’s toy. He looked but could not bring himself to waste his money.

His uncle, on te other hand, bought four or five stuffed animals. Brain thought: This guy really is a nut. I can’t believe it. He’s spent close to 50 for the toys.

“Lent’s get going, Brian,” Jim said as they hurried to his car. “It’s getting late and we have one last stop to make before I take you home.”

Finally, this day of torture would be over for Brian and he jumped into the car, anxious to get home. On the way, they did not stop at another store, as  he had expected, but  at an apartment building he’d  never seen before. His uncle got out and yelled to him, ” Come on. And bring those toys.”

Brian grabbed the bag of stuffed animals and walked inside, thinking: Maybe Uncle Jim moved to yhis place and didn’t tell us.

“Why are we here?” Brian asked as they knocked on one  of the thired-floor anpartment doors.

Jim paused for a moment, then said wiyh a smile,”Friends of mine live here.”

“Why are we here?” Brian asked as they knocked on one of the yhird-floor apartment doors.

Jim paused for a moment, then said with a smile,”Friends of mine live here.”

“Why are they?” Brian pressed.

“I don;t know. I never met them,” was Jim’s perplexing reply as a woman answered the door.

“He. My name is Jim and this is Brain. We got your name from the local relief fund and we’d like you to have these.” Jim took the bag from Brian and handed it to the woman, who simply looked at it and smiled. She motioned for them to come in and showed them into the living room. There was no tree. There were no lights. There was no plastic fireplace and no Bing Crosby. Just a little girl, maybe four years old.

The woman hid the bag behind a chair, took out a teddy bear,  and without a word gave it to Jim. He in turn it to Brian and nodded oward the girl.

Brian went over to the girl and knelt beside her. She looked up and immediately saw the stuffed bear he was holding. He held it out for her to take and at first she hesitated but after her mother assured her that it was all right, she took the boy.

Brian stood up and watched as the girl’s big brown eyes welled up with tears of joy. She hugged and kissed the bear  with all her strength and then cradled it gently in her arms. He looked at Jim, not knowing what to do. Jim smiled and simply said, “Merry Christmas,” to the woman and her daughter. Turning to go, he whispered, “Come on Brian.”

As the two went toward the door, the little girl put down her new tresure and rushed over to Brian. She could hardly reach his hand  but she took hold of it in both of hers and softly said to him, ” Marry Christmas,” then kissed the back of his hand ever so gently. Brian did not know what to say and  simply walked out the door,  lokking back only once to see the  little girl and her mother smiling at them.

Neither Brian or his uncle said anything in the car on the way home. Brian thought of nothing but that little girl and Jim just smiled. Whem they got to Brian’s  house, Jim broke their silence wiyh a simple, ” Looks like it’ll be a white Christmas this year  after all. Good night, Brian.

Brian stood watching for a minute as his uncle drove away. He looked at the neighbors’ houses covered with snow, and the  billowong smoke rising from the chimneys, and felt  a warm glow inside–a feeling he had for a long time. He could not keep from smiling and he felt like running and jumpig and singing Christmas carols out loud. Then, as if struck by a burst of lightning, he realized what had just happened. His uncle that nigh had shown him where to find the Christmases he had only remembered.’

That little girl’s happiness and joy had filled him with the warmth of childlike affection and love. By showing that little girl some kindness, he had  receivrd one of the greatest gifts he had ever known. He had given the spirote of Christmas.

Then he thought of what his father had said. “Christmas is for kids,” he said out loud. Only children know how to give pure, unselfish love that is not marred by the disappointments and discouragments of life. And in so giving, they make Christmas day, and every day, bright, and special, and wonderfull.

With a new understanding and a renewed sense of the season, Brian looked up at the stars and softly said, “Marry Christmas”.

Robinson Crusoe  (Թարգմանություն)

Robinson Crusoe (translation)

I was born in York, England in 1632. My father was German and my mother was English. I had two older brothers and a younger sister. The oldest brother joined the army and he was killed in battle. The middle one disappeared and we never heard what happened to him. I was well-educated and my father wanted me to study law, but I wanted to go to sea. Nothing would make me stay at home and become a lawyer.

I was 18 years old when my father called me to his room. He was old and he suffered from an illness which kept him in bed. My father asked me why I wanted to go to sea when I could stay at home, study and prosper in my own country. He told me that travelling by sea was dangerous. He warned me that I would lose safety and comfort of my home if I went to sea. My father also told me that if I went abroad, I could die like my oldest brother. When he was saying this, he started to cry and he couldn’t continue.

My father’s advice and warningsmade me think and I started to forget my desire to travel by sea. But my decision to stay home didn’t lastlong. One week passed and I decided to talk to my mother and tell her I wanted to travel. I told her how curious I was. I told her how I wanted to see the world. Then I asked her to speak to my father. I asked her to tell him to let me go on one sea journey. I promised that if I didn’t like it, I would go back home and start working very hard. My mother didn’t agree. She also didn’t want me to go abroad. I stayed home one more year. The whole time I was thinking whetherto follow my parents’ wish or my own desire.

One day in September I was in the town of Hull. A friend of mine was going with his father’s ship to London and he invited me to go with him for free. I wasn’t prepared and my parents didn’t know, but I boarded that ship on that September day. The moment the ship left the river and went into the sea my troubles started. There was strong wind and the sea was rough. A storm was approaching. I was very scared and I felt seasick. I began to regret my decision to leave home. I thought every wave was going to sink the ship. I promised myself I would go home and apologize to my parents as soon as I stepped on dry land again. The storm was over by the morning. I was still seasick during the day and I was thinking about the terrible storm. However, the evening was beautiful and the sea was very peaceful.

One of the sailors came to me and we started talking. He made some funny jokes. He asked me what I thought about the light wind. I told him I was very scared of the storm. The sailor offered me a drink. I gotdrunk and that night I slept very well. The next day, I forgot how scared I was. I also forgot my decision to go back home. Instead I was dreaming more about travelling by sea.

The next few days the wind was blowing against us and we couldn’t move much. Three days later the wind increased and we could go faster.

“A Letter from Santa Claus” by Mark Twain (Թարգմանություն)

Palace of Saint Nicholas in the Moon Christmas Morning

My Dear Susy Clemens,

I have received and read all the letters which you and your little sister have written me . . . . I can read your and your baby sister's jagged and fantastic marks without any trouble at all. But I had trouble with those letters which you dictated through your mother and the nurses, for I am a foreigner and cannot read English writing well. You will find that I made no mistakes about the things which you and the baby ordered in your own letters--I went down your chimney at midnight when you were asleep and delivered them all myself--and kissed both of you, too . . . . But . . . there were . . . one or two small orders which I could not fill because we ran out of stock . . . .

There was a word or two in your mama's letter which . . . I took to be "a trunk full of doll's clothes." Is that it? I will call at your kitchen door about nine o'clock this morning to inquire. But I must not see anybody and I must not speak to anybody but you. When the kitchen doorbell rings, George must be blindfolded and sent to the door. You must tell George he must walk on tiptoe and not speak-- otherwise he will die someday. Then you must go up to the nursery and stand on a chair or the nurse's bed and put your ear to the speaking tube that leads down to the kitchen and when I whistle through it you must speak in the tube and say, "Welcome, Santa Claus!" Then I will ask whether it was a trunk you ordered or not. If you say it was, I shall ask you what color you want the trunk to be . . . and then you must tell me every single thing in detail which you want the trunk to contain. Then when I say "Good-by and a merry Christmas to my little Susy Clemens," you must say "Good-by, good old Santa Claus, I thank you very much." Then you must go down into the library and make George close all the doors that open into the main hall, and everybody must keep still for a little while. I will go to the moon and get those things and in a few minutes I will come down the chimney that belongs to the fireplace that is in the hall--if it is a trunk you want--because I couldn't get such a thing as a trunk down the nursery chimney, you know . . . .If I should leave any snow in the hall, you must tell George to sweep it into the fireplace, for I haven't time to do such things. George must not use a broom, but a rag--else he will die someday . . . . If my boot should leave a stain on the marble, George must not holystone it away. Leave it there always in memory of my visit; and whenever you look at it or show it to anybody you must let it remind you to be a good little girl. Whenever you are naughty and someone points to that mark which your good old Santa Claus's boot made on the marble, what will you say, little sweetheart?

Sarah Jessica Parker (Թարգմանություն)

Parker was born in a poor coal-mining town in rural Ohio, the youngest of four children. Her parents divorced when she was two, and her mother remarried shortly thereafter and had an additional four children. Parker’s stepfather, a truck driver, was often out of work, so the future starlet took up singing and dancing at a very young age to help supplement her mom’s teaching income and feed their 10-person family. Despite hard times and occasionally being on welfare, Parker’s mom continued to encourage her children’s interest in the arts. The family moved to Cincinnati, where Parker was enrolled in a ballet, music, and theater school on scholarship. When she was 11 years old, the family took a trip to New York City so Parker could audition for a Broadway play. The trip was a success—she and her brother were both cast, and the family relocated to New York. Parker continued to work hard and land roles, eventually becoming the title character of TV juggernaut Sex and the City.

One thing you would change about the world

First of all, I would like to change that in the world, men would have more rights than women Because women do not differ from men and should have the same rights as menI would like to change that people treated nature well, because nature is beautiful and you do not need to spoil itI would also change that there was no hostility and war between the countries, as it is not pleasant and damaging to the population. It would have been that if people were not self-confident and would help everyone at every difficult timeHelp the older people feel good about them.

Aparan

Early history and Middle Ages

The first reference to the town of Aparan was made by Ptolemy during the 2nd century. Ptolemy referred to the settlement as Casala; the Hellenized version of the Armenian name of Kasagh. It was the centre of Nig canton of the Ayrarat province of ancient Armenia. Kasagh was under the administration of the Gntunik Armenian noble family, under the rule of the Arsacid dynasty of Armenia. The Gntunik princes founded the Basilica of Kasagh by the end of the 4th and beginning of the 5th centuries.

Between the 9th and 1th centuries, Aparan was part of the Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia. Starting from the 10th century, the settlement of Kasagh became known as Aparan. The new name was originated from the village of Aparank located in the Moxoene province of the Kingdom of Armenia, when some remains from the ancient Armenian monastery of Surp Khach of Aparan were transferred to the town of Kasagh. After the fall of Ani to the Byzantines in 1045, the Seljuks occupied most parts of the Armenian Highland by 1064. In mid 13th century, Armenia became part of the Ilkhanate of the Mongol Empire. By the last quarter of the 14th century, the Aq Qoyunlu Sunni Oghuz Turkic tribe took over Armenia, including Aparan, before being invaded by Timur in 1400. In 1410, Armenia fell under the control of the Kara Koyunlu Shia Oghuz Turkic tribe.

Modern history

During the years of the Armenian Genocide, many Armenian refuge families arrived in Bash-Aparan from the Western Armenian cities of Van, Mush, Alashkert and Karin between 1914-1918. Many other families had also arrived from the Eastern Armenian town of Khoy.

The town was the site of the famous Battle of Abaran against the Turkish army on May 21, 1918 during the Caucasus Campaign of World War I, when the Turkish invasion of the newly-independent Republic of Armenia was turned around. During the brief period of independence, Bash-Aparan became a gavar of Armenia.

Under the Soviet rule, the Bash-Aparan raion was founded in 1930. In 1935, the name was officially changed to Aparan. In 1963, Aparan was granted with the status of an urban-type settlement.

An impressive monument to the Battle of Abaran was erected in 1978 just north of the town, designed by architect Rafael Israelyan.

Following the independence of Armenia from the Soviet Union, Aparan was given the status of a town within the Aragatsotn Province, as per the administrative reforms of 1995.
